Each fall, the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) offers a variety of opportunities for students to meet successful filmmakers, actors and media professionals, and to view critically acclaimed films. These programs are provided free of charge to primary and secondary students at public and private schools in Hawaii. The programs' goals are to encourage students to produce quality work, view films through critical eyes, and aspire to higher education and careers in the media field. Teachers may register their class(es) for as many activities as will fit into their schedules. Reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Currently, HIFF offers four youth education programs:

  • GUEST FILMMAKER PROGRAM - Opportunities for students to learn from filmmakers through classroom visits (on O'ahu and other islands) and video conferences.
  • CULTURAL & VISUAL LITERACY PROGRAM - Free theater screenings of highly acclaimed films that are rarely accessible in Hawaii. Films this year: AFTER THE STORM, AMREEKA, DEAR LEMON LIMA (click for more film info, photos and trailers).
  • STUDENT SHOWCASE - A free screening of the best videos produced by students in grades K-12 from Hawaii and throughout the world.
  • STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES - (open to students in grades 9 to 12 on Oahu) During the year, the Festival needs hundreds of volunteers to ensure that audiences and guests have a great time at HIFF events. Students from schools all over Oahu have a great time volunteering and taking part in a fun and exciting cultural event. It's a great opportunity to meet new people, see great films, and serve the community. To learn more about HIFF's Volunteer Program, please e-mail us at volunteer@hiff.org or simply sign up at www.shiftboard.com/hiff.
