MARATHON

THE BEAT THAT...

MY HEART SKIPPED

MUGHAL-E-AZAM

Summer Saturday Movies on June 25!
Join us for HIFF Summer Saturday, on Saturday, June 25th at the historic Hawaii Theatre Center for a special day of film screenings in honor of our 25th anniversary this fall.

"HIFF turns 25 years old this year and to celebrate, we are planning to have special mini-events this summer to lead up to our main festival in late October,” says HIFF's Executive Director Chuck Boller. "We are pleased and honored to present HIFF Summer Saturday as a way to present three amazing and diverse international films to our film-hungry audiences. Think of it as an alternative to the Hollywood summer blockbuster season, and why not have it at the last movie palace on Oahu - "the Pride of the Pacific" - the historic Hawaii Theatre Center?"

12:30 p.m. THE BEAT THAT MY HEART SKIPPED

The Tribeca Film Festival favorite!

In this follow-up to his critical smash READ MY LIPS, Jacques Audiard has adapted and updated James Toback's cult 1978 noir FINGERS to come up with this memorable character study about a young man torn between a life of crime and classical music. THE BEAT THAT MY HEART SKIPPED premiered at Berlin 2005, where it played to enthusiastic audiences and had a smashing North American debut at this year's Tribeca Film Festival.

Romain Duris (L'AUBERGE ESPAGNOL), in a standout performance, portrays the 28 year-old Tom who seems destined to follow in his father's footsteps as a Parisian property shark working in a sleazy and sometimes brutal milieu. However, a chance encounter with his late mother's music agent rekindles a desire for a musical career and hope for a better life. Like READ MY LIPS, Audiard has fused two unlikely worlds into a stunning vision featuring a menacing and dangerous Paris rarely seen on screen.

3:30 p.m. MUGHAL-E-AZAM

See India's epic version of GONE WITH THE WIND!

Bollywood's most iconic film, K. Asif's MUGHAL-E-AZAM makes a welcome return to the screen 45 years after its initial release. The first film in world cinema history to be colorized specifically for a theatrical release, it tells the story of 16th-century doomed lovers, rebellious Prince Salim (Dilip Kumar) and court dancer Anarkali (Madhubala).

A cross between GONE WITH THE WIND and BEN HUR, MUGHAL-E-AZAM fuses a sweeping love story with epic battle scenes. As the only son of the mighty Emperor Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor), Prince Salim is pandered to hand and foot. But when his father attempts to thwart his love for a commoner, Salim is forced to lead an army against his pa - a rather ill-advised decision which leads to a death sentence for Salim and entombment alive for Anarkali.

Featuring lavish musical numbers (one song alone employed a chorus of 100 singers) and poignant performances, MUGHAL-E-AZAM took an incredible nine years to make (1951-1960). With films from MOULIN ROUGE to THE GURU springing from the Bollywood phenomenon, this is a rare chance to see where it all began.

7:30 p.m. MARATHON

Korea's box office hit comes to Hawaii!

MARATHON is a movie that sounds like stereotypical sappiness on paper, but it is the biggest Korean hit of the year - so big that every other movie is eating its dust. Shot on location at the site of last year's Chuncheon Marathon and based on a true story, MARATHON is all about a twenty-year-old autistic guy (played by Cho Seung-Woo; LOW LIFE, HIFF '04 and CHUHNYANG, HIFF '02) whose one pleasure is running. Happy that he can do anything, his mom hires him a coach to train him to run marathons, but the only coach she can afford is a washed up loser whose best days are way behind him (Lee Ki-Young, from the Korean drama THE PRINCE'S FIRST LOVE).

In Korea, a bonafide blockbuster will sell about 3 million tickets. MARATHON has sold twice that many, and it's still trucking along. Its plot may sound corny, but audiences and critics have been rightly praising it as one of the must-see Korean films of the year. MARATHON swept the 2005 Baeksang Arts Awards, winning Best Feature Film, Best Actor (Cho Seung-Woo) and Best Screenplay.
