Director Isao Yukisada (CRYING OUT LOVE IN THE CENTER OF THE WORLD, HIFF Spring '05) returns to the screen with his epic drama of a samurai clan in exile in YEAR ONE IN THE NORTH! YEAR ONE stars the acclaimed Sayuri Yoshinaga (star of 100 films - including Kon Ichikawa's THE MAKIOKA SISTERS - and winner of three Best Actress Awards from the Japanese Academy) and Ken Watanabe (TAMPOPO and THE LAST SAMURAI). Set in the 1870s, YEAR ONE revolves around a group of samurai and their families who are forced from their homes on Awajishima island in the Inland Sea by the new Meiji government and relocated to the freezing wilds of Hokkaido. Ken Watanabe portrays samurai Hideaki Komatsubara, the leader of this band of pioneers, as they struggle to survive in an unfamiliar and unforgiving environment. After filming THE LAST SAMURAI, Watanabe says "I got very interested in this film which deals with the same period. I felt this was a film I had to do. Samurai in YEAR ONE are samurai in name only. They carry a sword, but it's only a symbol. They decide to discard their warrior lifestyle and adjust to the new system, but it's a struggle for them.''
