“Like Maddah” is a comedic web series about three generations of iron-willed local Japanese mothers and daughters in Hawai‘i. The protagonist, Amy Shiraishi-Knudsen, is a child psychologist who returns to the islands after 20 years on the mainland. She vowed never to return to her large, nosy family, but her haole husband got a 3-year job opportunity of a lifetime. And she could finally stay home with the baby and, more importantly, mend her troubled relationship with Ella, her rebellious 14-year-old daughter. Unfortunately, Ella ends up disliking her even more, and Aimee must fend off the demands of her extended family and their elaborate network of friends and neighbors who collect, weaponize, and disseminate gossip to the point of landing Aimee in jail, unjustly, where she pours out her tale of woe to an unsympathetic police captain.
