TALKING THE PICTURES
Spotlight on JapanMasayuki Suo
Shuntaro Someya (Ryo Narita, also in this year's FAREWELL SONG, and JUST ONLY LOVE) dreams of becoming a katsudo benshi (beloved performers who provide live narration to silent films) and captivate viewers with narrations that stir their hearts. However, he currently works with a group of thieves as a phony katsudo benshi and decides to run away to Aoki-kan, a small town with a famous theater. The screenings at Aoki-kan are always empty, however, after losing its staff and customers to a rival theater in a neighboring town.
Nevertheless, Shuntaro is excited at the prospect of finally becoming a real katsudo benshi, but the theater is full of over-the-top individuals—the owner of the theater and his wife treat him like a slave, their current katsudo benshi is always drunk, a vain and arrogant competitor, and a cantankerous, hard-to-please projectionist. When he is reunited with his first childhood love (Yuina Kuroshima), Shuntaro finds the courage to summon his voice and become a katsudo benshi star.
A tribute to Japan’s silent film era at the turn of the twentieth century, acclaimed director Masayuki Suo (SHALL WE DANCE?) brings us back a simple nostalgic time full of romance, action, and comedy, TALKING THE PICTURES is a film for cinephiles of any generation.
