Thưa Mẹ Con Đi

After a long stint abroad in the United States, a young man named Van returns to Vietnam to attend his father’s memorial ceremony. Life in his home village has notably declined in his absence: his grandmother suffers from dementia and his relatives appear to be mixed up in the latest get-rich-quick scheme. While his mother is pleased that his son has returned home and hopes his stay will be indefinite as she struggles to cope with life without her husband, she restrains herself from inquiring further about the overly affectionate and attentive handsome overseas-born Vietnamese man named Ian her son brought home with him.
A critical and commercial success in Vietnam and premiering at the Busan International Film Festival in October 2019, GOODBYE MOTHER is a landmark in inclusive storytelling for the region, notable for representing queer characters and experiences without relying on tired stereotypes or overtly sexualized performances. Through lush cinematography and careful direction by newcomer Trinh Dinh Le Minh, this family dramedy film explores themes of autonomy, masculinity, and the perpetual challenges of filial obligation through masterful filmmaking.
