PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE
Portrait De La Jeune Fille En Feu
European ShowcaseCéline Sciamma
In the dying days of pre-revolutionary France, gifted artist Marianne (Noémi Merlant) is commissioned to paint a portrait of Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), a young woman soon to be married who refuses to pose. Disguised as Héloïse’s new walking partner, Marianne spends her days in conversation as the pair stroll through their breathtaking island home and her nights painting her partner from memory. As the two women grow closer and Marianne struggles to maintain the facade, their relationship blooms into something neither expected.
Director Céline Sciamma’s intimate followup to GIRLHOOD wowed critics at Cannes, where PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE was widely considered the standout film of the festival, where it was awarded Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm. Bolstered by outstanding supporting performances from Luàna Bajrami and Valeria Golino, Sciamma and her two leads present a powerful story of desolate beauty and human intimacy.
Well-crafted and heart-wrenchingly romantic, PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE is a powerful testament to love, beauty and female friendship.
