Ricky (Kris Hitchen) and his family have been fighting an uphill struggle against debt since the 2008 financial crash. His wife Abby (Debbie Honeywood) is a contract nurse and caregiver who provides most of the stability of their household. Looking to regain his honor as the family breadwinner, Ricky gains an opportunity to wrestle back some financial independence by owning his own franchise as a self-employed delivery driver.
The work is high-pressure with strict parameters, and Ricky even pressures his wife to sell her car to pay down the growing debt from investing in their new business. Their financial and personal struggles mount to a breaking point as they are pulled into a Catch-22 nightmare, seduced by the grandeur of self-employment and economic freedom but falling further into despair.
SORRY WE MISSED YOU explores the struggles of “zero-hour” contract employment in the United Kingdom as a microcosm of the near-universal anxiety towards global economic instability and the rise of untethered, on-demand gigs in the contemporary era. Veteran director Ken Loach’s follow-up film to his Palm d’Or Winner I, DANIEL BLAKE continues his dedication to an earnest representation of the plight of the working class and a critique of the broken British welfare system.
