49-year-old Kunio (Yutaka Matsushige) is a successful writer, living a happy life with his wife Sachi (Keiko Kitagawa). Though Sachi is quite a bit younger than Kunio, the two have always agreed that they didn’t want children. But as all of Sachi’s friends enter motherhood, she has a sudden change of heart. Kunio agrees, but things don’t always go as planned!
Based on an autobiographical essay written by the real-life Kunio Hikita (published in June 2012 by Kobunsha) and written and directed by rising filmmaker Toru Hosokawa, this film was screened in the competition section of the 9th Beijing International Film Festival. A heartfelt and hilarious exploration of the all-too-common trials and tribulations of conception, THE HIKITA’S ARE EXPECTING! is a simple comedy about one of life’s many complicated dramas.
