THE KILLER with John Woo
Spotlight on Hong KongJohn Woo
Director JOHN WOO in attendance for a special post-screening discussion.
John Woo’s poetic bromance of honor and death celebrates its 30th anniversary! Ah Jong (Chow Yun-fat) is the ultimate hitman with a heart of gold. After accidentally damaging the eyes of club singer Jennie (Sally Yeh) while doing a job, Ah Jong decides to do one last hit in order to pay for Jennie’s expensive eye surgery and quit the business once and for all. But things do not go as smoothly. Consummate police detective Lee Ying (Danny Lee) is hot on his trail, determined to capture the criminal. However, as the two play a dangerous game of cat and mouse, they soon find their lives deeply intertwined in bullets and brotherhood as Jong postpones retirement to redeem his only failure.
A calling card that brought John Woo to Hollywood, THE KILLER is revered as one of the greatest action films during the Golden Age of Hong Kong cinema. With its brilliant fight choreography and stylistic flourishes, THE KILLER influenced the action genre and future filmmakers on both sides of the Pacific.
