THE WANDERING CHEF
Mixed Plate Hye Ryeong Park
Jiho Im is a globally celebrated chef, known for traveling from one end of the Korean peninsula to the other, foraging for unique ingredients— mosses, herbs and roots—known for their medicinal properties. While traversing across the country, he meets unsuspecting locals along the way, listening to their stories, carries their burdens, resulting in him preparing delightful meals that warm their bellies and fills their souls.
Chef Im is very much an old soul longing for the maternal affection, especially since he never knew his mother. Along the way, he meets Soon-Gyu, an elderly woman who offers him a bowl of soup. In return, he conceives and prepares an epic feast, thus sowing the seeds of a deeply moving friendship.
Director Hye-Ryoung Park crafts a poignant documentary that illustrates the deep connection between food, ritual and memory. She is especially fortunate to have such a compelling subject as Chef Im to follow. THE WANDERING CHEF, ultimately, is an homage to Mother Nature via a heartwarming culinary journey.
