Corrupt cop Cristi (Vlad Ivanow) travels to the Canary Island of La Gomera, where he collaborates with mobsters in order to try and free a shady Bucharest businessman named Zsolt, who is believed to know the whereabouts of a mattress containing millions in cash. Under heavy surveillance on the island, Cristi is taught by the local gangsters and a femme fatale named Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) to communicate in an indigenous whistle language called "El Siblo," unintelligible to the police because it sounds like bird calls.
In his latest film, THE WHISTLERS, Corneliu Porumboiu, a vanguard of the Romanian New Wave (known for its realist minimalism and austere, black humor), “gives us a knotty, twisty, nifty plot that’s quite involved but hangs together well, and there’s an amusing juxtaposition of gloomy, rainy Bucharest and the sunny terrain of La Gomera. We also get a neat and unexpected coda. An elegant and stylishly crafted piece of entertainment” (THE GUARDIAN).
