THE WILD GOOSE LAKE
Spotlight on ChinaYinan Diao
“Diao’s film confirms that the noir tradition is alive and well and being comprehensively reinvented in China” -- Screen Daily
After career criminal Zhou Zenong (Hu Ge) is released from prison, he accidentally shoots a cop during a motorcycle-stealing contest with a rival gang, triggering a massive manhunt with a hefty price on his head. Hiding out in the lawless region surrounding the Wild Goose Lake near the central Chinese city of Wuhan, Zhou recounts his story to Liu Aiai (Gwei Lun Mei), a young woman sent to rendezvous with him near a rain-soaked train station. Concocting a plan to evade the tightening grip of the authorities, the pair delve deeper into the murky underbelly of contemporary Chinese society.
Shot with trademark nocturnal flare by Diao Yinan (BLACK COAL, THIN ICE, HIFF 2014), THE WILD GOOSE LAKE blends noir with subtle absurdism to create a playful work of contemporary Chinese genre filmmaking.
