FILM FOR THOUGHT: IN CONVERSATION WITH EMMA KAWAWADA | MY SMALL LAND

Join us for a FREE extended virtual discussion with Emma Kawawada, director of MY SMALL LAND. This discussion will be presented as part of our Film For Thought program in partnership with the Hawaii Council for the Humanities.

Emma Kawawada graduated from Waseda University where she studied theater and film arts in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her feature-length film CIRCLE, which she directed as a college student, was the grand prize runner-up at the Waseda Film Festival and the Tokyo Student Film Festival. She joined production company BUN-BUKU, mainly led by Hirokazu Kore-eda and Miwa Nishikawa, in November 2014 and was the assistant for Director Kore-eda for THE THIRD MURDER and Director Nanako Hirose for HIS LOST NAME. She also directed several episodes of KYO-NO, AKINAI between 2015 and 2016. MY SMALL LAND is her second feature.


The discussion will be moderated by University of Hawaii scholar Monisha Das Gupta. Monisha Das Gupta is Professor of Ethnic Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She is an Asian Americanist who specializes in migration to the United States and Hawaiʻi.
