HOMMAGE

HOMMAGE

오마주

Ji-wan is a filmmaker at the crux of a mid-life crisis, flatlining in a middling career after her 3rd film is a flop and stuck in a loveless marriage. Then she gets a catalyst of an opportunity to jump start her career–a restoration of a 1960s classic that purportedly is directed by Korea’s first female filmmaker. This leads her on a path of self-discovery, re-examining her life, her career and her relationship with her college-age aspiring poet son.

Shin Su-won, one of South Korea’s most exciting indie directors, has been celebrated at HIFF with her previous works MADONNA (2015) and GLASS GARDEN (2017). In HOMMAGE, Shin crafts a cunningly subversive yet tender and humorous drama about a female artist, examining what it means to be both a creative and a wife and mother.

Known for a filmography that explores the underbelly of Korean patriarchy, HOMMAGE feels very close to home to Shin, reflecting her personal journey as a female director navigating her own path in a world where her male counterparts are feted at Cannes, win Oscars, and can truly “have it all.”
