SYNOPSIS

Osaka, 1802. Eight year-old Mio and Noe, although they come from different social circumstances, are close friends. One day they happen to meet a fortune-teller, who says that Noe’s destiny is to ‘rise like the sun’, while Mio’s is a ‘cloudless blue sky’ indicating a life of unceasing hardship. The girls pay this no heed, promising ‘whatever happens, we’ll always be together.’ That night, however, the city suffers a massive flood with tragic results.

Suddenly Mio becomes estranged from her hometown and her best friend. Years later, after being taken in by a local restauranteur, she finds herself cooking at a soba shop in Edo. It’s not long before it becomes clear that she is a masterful chef, quickly creating a sensation in town, and unknowingly connecting her with Noe (now a famous courtesan). However, challenges abound for a young woman trying to infiltrate the Edo restaurant scene.
