PACIFICTION

On the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, the High Commissioner of the Republic, De Roller, is a calculating man with flawless manners. His somewhat broad perception of his role brings him to navigate the high end “establishment” as well as shady venues where he mingles with the locals. As rumors of malign influence from Russia, China, and the U.S. are whispered throughout the island’s occupier community—-from nuclear meddling to financial malfeasance–De Roller fancies himself a mover and shaker, which is all a veil to cover the truth that he is essentially a ineffectual government puppet, posted in a far away outpost that is very well a tropical Siberia.

Deliberately paced, Albert Serra’s latest is a hypnotic look at contemporary malaise, carefully orchestrated with specific mood and tone that lulls the viewer into a lethargy from swaying palm trees, distant reverberation of marimba music, and the golden glow of the Tahitian sunset. PACIFICTION is a statement of post-colonial vestiges, inspired by the works of Joseph Conrad with a stellar performance by Benoît Magimel as the inept bureaucrat–who embodies the greed, hypocrisy and paranoia of colonial power.
