PIANO DREAMS

There are currently 40 million piano students in China. With many practicing up to ten hours a day, “piano-mania” has truly gripped the nation. Shanghai Conservatory is the nation’s most prestigious music academy…and there are only 30 spots for budding Lang Langs. PIANO DREAMS follows three young hopefuls and their dedicated families–eight year-old Xia Zidi dreams of being a pilot by day and a pianist by night; 12 year-old Xi Yingying wants to be a famous concert pianist; and 19 year-old Zhou Yu’ang has his heart set on studying in the United States.

Director Gary Lennon (a former Shanghai resident who lived next door to the famed Conservatory) breaks through the “tiger parenting” cliches and shows a more complex reality, expertly bringing balance to a triptych of stories chronicling anemic struggles and musical triumphs, with recurring themes of family, sacrifice and food (lots of it). PIANO DREAMS very much captures a sense of changing times and the aspirations of China’s urban middle-class.
