SWEET AS

With problems on the home front, 16-year-old Murra (Shantae Barnes-Cowan) is on the verge of lashing out. That is, until her policeman uncle averts her self-destructive behavior with a lifeline: a “photo-safari for at-risk kids” in Pilbara Country in Northwest Australia. Joined by three other teens – cantankerous Kylie, highly strung Sean, happy-go-lucky Elvis – and camp counselors Fernando and Mitch, Murra begins to find herself by discovering a love of photography and reconnecting with the country of her ancestors.

Charming, joyful and redemptive, SWEET AS celebrates the resilience of family and Indigenous tradition against all odds. Awarded the prestigious NETPAC award at TIFF and the Blackmagic Digital Australian Innovation Award at the Melbourne International Film festival, SWEET AS heralds the emergence of major new talents in Nyul Nyul / Yawuru director Jub Clerc and star Shantae Barnes-Cowan.

“Storytelling is in our blood. We never had a written language. We sang, we danced and painted all of our stories, and now we have a new medium.” – Jub Clerc
