THE FIVE DEVILS

LES CINQ DIABLES

Vicky, a strange and solitary little girl, has “special powers:” she can reproduce any scent she likes, and collects them in a series of carefully labeled jars that trigger her to travel through time and space. She has secretly captured the scent of Joanne (Adèle Exarchopoulos from BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR), her mother for whom she nurtures a wild, excessive love. When her father’s sister Julia bursts into their life, Vicky reproduces her smell and is transported into dark and archaic memories which lead her to uncover the secrets of her village, her family and her own existence.

Director Lea Mysius follows her celebrated directorial debut AVA, which world premiered at Cannes 2017, with a sensitive, surreal, spellbinding second feature about motherhood and repressed love. THE FIVE DEVILS (going two for two in Cannes premieres for the young director) is an intriguing time-bending family drama that cleverly uses the special powered little girl trope as catalyst to explore family secrets and trauma in a fantastic genre film that joins the ranks of female-led genre classics like TITANE and REVENGE.
