THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET

白日青春

For Pakistani refugees, there’s little sunshine on either side of the unwelcome Hong Kong streets where they are forced to live on the edge. They can’t work to earn a living, while often waiting years for their asylum claims to be heard. Some turn to crime, while others are forced to eke by on the kindness and charity of strangers. When a refugee struggling to makes ends meet has a fateful collision with alcoholic cab driver named Yat (Anthony Wong), it sets off a chain of events leading to tragedy.

Left behind is 10-year-old Hassan, whose mother now faces deportation. It’s not long before he spirals into crime. When Yat learns the fate of the boy, feeling guilty for his father’s demise, he rescues him from the grips of a drug-running gang. They form an uneasy father-son relationship as they elude police and search for a way to smuggle Hassan out of Hong Kong with hopes he will find sunnier streets – and life – in Canada.

Writer-director Lau Kok Rui leans in on his own immigrant experience, which he has explored in his documentary work. He draws out impressive depth in his main characters played by veteran actor Anthony Wong in a tour-de-force performance and newcomer Sahal Saman. A first feature from director Lau, SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET is a Malaysian-Hong Kong co-production produced through the Hong Kong-Asia Film Forum (HAF).
