HIFF39 KAU KA HŌKŪ NOMINEE: 5 Questions with Kim Yoon-seok, director of ANOTHER CHILD
We’ve all heard the old aphorism expressed by every journeyed actor in film: “What I really want to do is direct…” What about those who somehow manage to fill the director’s chair and still remain in front of the camera?
Kim Yoon-seok, already a popular Korean actor in such seminal films like THE CHASER, TAZZA, and SEA FOG, pulled double duty for his KAU KA HŌKŪ nominated film ANOTHER CHILD, a tale of two schoolmates who discover that one of their fathers is having an affair with the other’s mother. A complicated tale of blended families, social taboos, and interrogating the true meaning of sisterhood, we wanted to know more about Kim’s unique perspective as part of both cast and crew.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey as a filmmaker thus far.
I’m Kim Yoon-seok, and I’ve been an actor in Korea for about 30 years. This year, I debuted as a director with my first feature film, ANOTHER CHILD.
What inspired and motivated you to work on ANOTHER CHILD?
In 2014, I watched a play which was part of a workshop for young theater-makers and suggested to the writer to write a scenario for a film together. This was the start of ANOTHER CHILD. The ones who are guilty snore deep in sleep, drunk, while the ones who are innocent try to sustain their dignity without hiding, even if their hearts are broken. That is what I wanted to reflect in this film.
What were some of the greatest challenges of working on ANOTHER CHILD?
It was quite a pressure, both physically and mentally, to direct my first film and to play the role of Dae-won at the same time.
What do you hope audiences will take away from watching ANOTHER CHILD?
I am rather curious about what the audience will feel mostly, and what particular part or scene will be the most memorable for them.
What are you and ANOTHER CHILD’s plans beyond HIFF?
I have recently finished filming a romantic comedy film, VIRUS. Now I have another picture scheduled for filming. I am also preparing as a director, so please look forward to it.
