GO BACK TO CHINA is the latest film from filmmaker Emily Ting (ALREADY TOMORROW IN HONG KONG, HIFF 2015). Going the semi-biographical route for her second feature (Ting has loosely based the story on her own 12-year experience working for her family’s toy factory in China), the main character is spoiled rich girl Sasha Li (Youtube star Anna Akana), a young Los Angeles fashion-school graduate, who thinks nothing of running up a $2,000 tab for champagne at a club. As she burns through her trust fund with reckless abandon, her father (Richard Ng) cuts her off. As an ultimatum, he forces Sasha to go back to China and work for the family toy business.
What begins simply as a way to regain financial support soon develops into a life altering journey of self discovery, as Sasha discovers her passion for toy designing and learns to reconnect with her estranged family, especially her half-sister played by Lynn Chen and her biological mother, played by Hawai‘i’s own Kelly Hu. A bittersweet portrait of a fractured family, GO BACK TO CHINA also offers an honest look at the human cost of things that are made in China.
