Veteran director and HIFF-fan favorite Masato Harada is back with his most action-packed samurai epic to-date. The master of historical drama, Harada turns his impeccable attention to detail on the life of Toshizo Hijikata, vice-commander of the shinsengumi and staunch opposer of the Meiji Restoration.
Starring Junichi Okada as Hijikata in one of his best career performances, and supported by an all-star cast, BARAGAKI: UNBROKEN SAMURAI is based on the novel ‘Moeyo Ken’ by Ryotaro Shiba (also the author of Harada’s adaptation SEKIGAHARA). Set in the mid-19th century, the film follows Hijikata, known for his swordsmanship and ruthless leadership, as he works to lead the shinsengumi to protect the shogunate during the tumultuous shift in the balance of power at the end of the Togukawa era. Harada holds no punches, and BARAGAKI is suspenseful and thrilling, featuring some of the most sophisticated action choreography and swordplay seen in recent years. A truly cinematic experience, this is a must-see on the big screen.
