Director Im Sang-soo (THE HOUSEMAID) returns with his most endearing and heartfelt film to date. Busan IFF 2021 Opening Night Film, HEAVEN: TO THE LAND OF HAPPINESS is a fresh take on the fugitive buddy road movie (à la THELMA & LOUISE). Prisoner 203 (Choi Min-sik) only has a few months left on his sentence, but when he finds out he only has two weeks left to live, he decides he needs to make a break for it. In his dash to flee the hospital, he unintentionally lures hospital worker Nam Sik (Park Hae-il) into the getaway car, well…hearse.
Nam-sik, it turns out, is not too displeased with this arrangement, as he was about to face imminent arrest for stealing medicine from the hospital pharmacy. Afflicted with a rare disease, Nam-sik relies on very expensive drugs to stay alive, forcing him into a life of thievery. Realizing there is no turning back, this unlikely pair go on the run, hunted not only by the police but also the gangster owners of the stolen hearse..
With a pitch perfect blend of drama, action, tragedy, and humour, HEAVEN: TO THE LAND OF HAPPINESS delivers both thrills and heartrending moments bound to move the audience. And unsurprisingly, Choi Min-sik and Park Hae-il both lead with stellar performances as the unlikely fugitive duo, forging a hit in the making.
