Although Hawai‘i’s film industry is burgeoning and perhaps more vital than ever as “Hollyood’s backlot,” the drive for the local creative communities is to create original intellectual properties and provide local actors to shine in authentic and artistically relevant roles. In this panel, we discuss the actor’s journey in an ever-changing media landscape and the spike of TV and film production for major streaming platforms, which seems limitless. The panel will focus on examples of content being created by and about marginalized communities and go into the nitty gritty of being a BIPOC actor, working in Hollywood and Hawai‘i, and how the panelists’ careers are changing with the times.
Filipino American and Hawaii born actor KIMEE BALMILERO is best known for her regular role as Medical Examiner Dr. Noelani Cunha on CBS’ HAWAII 5-0 and MAGNUM P.I. While living in Los Angeles, she studied improv & sketch comedy at the Uprights Citizens Brigade Theatre in Hollywood and performs with the ongoing show FILIPINO AF whenever she is back in town.
TIM CHIOU is a Taiwanese American actor who has played a number of television and film roles. He most notably played venture capitalist Ed Chen on Season 4 of HBO’s SILICON VALLEY, Michael ‘Thirty Mike’ Chen in SEAL TEAM, and in films PLUS ONE CRUSH THE SKULL and I WAS A SIMPLE MAN.
KANOA GOO is an actor and writer, known for I WAS A SIMPLE MAN (2021), ENDINGS, BEGINNINGS (2019) and OTHER PEOPLE (2016).
AMY HILL is an American actress and stand-up comedian. She is known for often playing grandmother or motherly type roles in both live-action and voice roles from ALL-AMERICAN GIRL, 50 FIRST DATES, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, and LILO & STITCH. She currently plays Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta, and is part of the main cast of MAGNUM PI, currently in its fourth season.
