High school student Minami has a happy life with her mom and stepdad, enjoys swimming and her favorite anime Buffalo Koteko the Magical Plasterer. She’s never met her biological father, but hasn’t been too bothered about that. However, when she receives a mysterious handwritten talisman in the mail it sets off a chain of events that peak her interest in her ‘real dad’.
With help from classmate and fellow Koteko fan Shohei, she learns that her father was the leader of an infamous cult who has renounced his position and disappeared. Determined to track him down, they enlist the assistance of Shohei’s brother and discover his location. With a clever ruse in place, Minami masterminds a plan to sneak off from her summer swim camp to meet her enigmatic dad. Her summer adventure begins….
The latest from Shuichi Okita (THE WOODSMAN AND THE RAIN – HIFF32, ECOTHERAPY GETAWAY HOLIDAY – HIFF34 to name a few), ONE SUMMER STORY is a languid, sun-soaked exploration of self discovery and the nature of familial connection, wrapped in a coming of age tale. A heartfelt and uplifting film, a must-see at HIFF41!
