WE’VE ONLY GOT THIS WORLD

Wol ia Nomo

Rodney and Betty are earth science students in Vanuatu. Their teacher Mr. Robertson takes their class on field trips to isolated green spaces in the ever-growing town; to the municipal rubbish dump in an attempt to make the students understand the ecological disaster facing every corner of the globe. This inspires Rodney to take up the crusade to combat climate change. He also has a crush on Betty, who cannot be bothered with such “trivial things,” and would rather hang at the back of the class, listening to music on her earphones surreptitiously.

But, when Betty’s mother sends her to their home village to visit her grandfather, she begins to grasp the tensions and quarrels that the worsening environment is creating. Meanwhile, Rodney takes his one man environmental crusade to town protesting loudly on street corners until he is arrested. Can Betty’s new awareness bring her closer to Rodney?

WE’VE ONLY GOT THIS WORLD is the latest production by Wan Smolbag – a theatre troupe based in Port Vila, Vanuatu – and their response to the devastating effects happening before their very eyes caused by the climate crisis.
