I ♥️ HIFF Month: MAKING THE LINE (WIP)

With I Heart HIFF Month kicking off in August, we are excited to share a special event open to ALL HIFF Members! This work-in-progress screening will feature a Q&A with the director and cast, along with special hula performances.

Join the director and cast of MAKING THE LINE for a special live work-in-progress screening, followed by a Q&A and captivating hula performances.

Synopsis: In the heart of Hawai‘i, two Kumu Hula lead their team of Native Hawaiian athletes to their limits, confronting personal and cultural challenges as they strive to triumph at Merrie Monarch—the “Olympics of Hula.”

MAKING THE LINE is anchored by two queer Kanaka Kumu Hula, whose journeys ground the film in emotional truth and cultural nuance. Through their stories—and those of their Haumāna (students) —the film showcases the camaraderie, sisterhood, and brotherhood forged through competition. Audiences will find themselves rooting not just for a win, but for the preservation of a culture and the future of those who carry it forward.
