Beyond Resilience:
A Part Of/Apart From

SUN 10/6 3:30 - 4:30 PM
Entrepreneurs SANDBOX

Presented by FIRELIGHT MEDIA
Though the United States has positioned itself as a beacon of democracy, its colonial power over five territories (Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands) complicates that narrative. These territories, as well as the U.S. state of Hawai’i, have been exploited for their lush land and resources, and their people deployed as shields in far-flung wars. But because those born in U.S. territories are not legally afforded the same access, opportunities, or rights as U.S. citizens, its people are often considered “a part of and apart from” the continental U.S.

To build on the themes of liminality and separation woven throughout the documentary short film collection HOMEGROWN: A Part Of/Apart From (premiering at HIFF ‘24), Firelight Media will host an intimate Beyond Resilience panel conversation between Dr. Michael Bevacqua of the Fanachu! podcast (moderator), and two HOMEGROWN filmmakers.

HIFF Legacy: Donald Richie Centennial Tribute

TUE 10/8 3PM - 5 PM
HIFF HQ

This year marks the 100th year of the birth of Donald Richie, the world-renowned American scholar and critic who was instrumental in introducing Japanese cinema to the west. He would be based in post-war Japan until his death in 2013. He was also a friend of HIFF, serving as a consultant in the Festival’s early days, working alongside HIFF founding director Jeannette Paulson Hereniko. There is no doubt that Richie’s imprimatur established HIFF as the festival of record of Asia-Pacific Rim cinema, now entering its fourth decade.

In this special tribute-as part of the HIFF LEGACY PROJECT-this “talk story” salutes Richie’s unique perspective on Japan, as both insider and outsider, throughout all his creative endeavors. Friends of Richie-the aforementioned Hereniko, Christopher Blasdell (music professor, shakuhachi musician); film critic Mark Schilling-will reminisce, celebrate and delve into Richie’s legacy as a scholar and as a dear friend. This presentation will also offer glimpses into the many creative worlds Donald inhabited, including photos of his artworks, a performance of live shakuhachi music he composed, short films DEAD YOUTH and the fifth and last segment of FIVE FILOSOPHICAL FABLES.
will also be screened.

MAKING MOANA:
A MASTERCLASS

FRI 10/11, 11:30am
Punahou School Luke Lecture Hall

A detailed, behind the scenes master-class with Speakers: John Musker, Ron Clements and Osnat Shurer,
exploring the production of MOANA with the producer and directors of the original film.

We’ll delve into production challenges particular to MOANA, like:

How do you stage a film that is almost entirely shot on the water?

How do you animate that amazing, luxuriant hair?

What will it take to treat the ocean as a living character or to stage an emotional scene between an entire living island and a small human?

By what means can we best wed classic hand drawn animation with CG animation in Maui’s tattoos?

Should Pua and Heihei be along for the journey?

HIFILM PANEL: FROM MERMAIDS TO MOANA AN ANIMATED EVENT

SUN 10/13 10:30 AM
KAHALA Theatres

In this panel we’ll look at how the career journeys of acclaimed MOANA directors Ron Clements and John Musker (LITTLE MERMAID, ALADDIN, HERCULES) and MOANA producer, Osnat Shurer (documentaries, interactive shows, Pixar shorts, RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON) led to the original film that became the text to one of Disney’s most prevalent and successful properties.

We’ll take a deep dive into cultural representation and collaboration in the creation of MOANA throughout the process. From early research trips that helped create ongoing relationships with storytellers, elders and master navigators from the Pacific islands, through the process of casting the movie and finding the right musical team, all the way to the post release ‘ripples’ of MOANA – like the Tahitian, Maori and Hawaiian translations created for the schools – we’ll explore the lasting impact the film has had on the filmmakers, on Disney, and on the Pasifika community.
