SI LA ISLA QUIERE (ISLAND WILLING)

SI LA ISLA QUIERE

“There is a saying, ‘God willing,’ but on the island you say ‘Island willing,’ as if the island were an entity.”

Robinson Crusoe Island is home to more endemic species per square kilometer than the Galápagos. Today, the community defends its culture of stewardship against outside pressures, with the Island itself emerging as both setting and protagonist. Though never home to an Indigenous population, islanders—descended from migrants settled from around the world more than 200 years ago—identify as “endemic” themselves. But that legacy is under siege. When Chile declared the island a National Park, sweeping bans on farming displaced families and invasive species flourished, resulting in an over dependence on the mainland. Now, Islanders fight to chart their own vision of stewardship. Si la isla quiere is an ensemble portrait of people and place, revealing climate resilience doesn’t come from controlling a landscape, but from a deeply rooted sense of place.
