FATHERLAND

genres:

At the height of the Cold War, acclaimed filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski (IDA, COLD WAR) brings to the screen the extraordinary relationship between Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann, played by Hanns Zischler, and his fearless daughter Erika Mann, portrayed by Sandra Hüller, the celebrated actress, writer, and outspoken anti-fascist. As father and daughter embark on a road trip across a shattered postwar Germany, traveling from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-occupied Weimar in a black Buick, they confront a homeland physically destroyed and morally divided. Along the way, old wounds, political convictions, and family tensions surface as they grapple with questions of exile, identity, and what it means to return to a country that once rejected them.
