Halloween Chills & Otaku Thrills: Japanese Genre Double Features at HIFF46

From J-horror nightmares and killer bears to mind-bending sci-fi and VHS-era mysteries, HIFF46 celebrates the wild imagination of Japanese genre cinema.

The 46th Hawai‘i International Film Festival presented by Halekulani (HIFF46) presents two Japanese genre double features showcasing the inventive storytelling that has made Japan a global force in horror, science fiction, anime, manga, and cult cinema.

Part of the Festival’s HIFF After Dark programming, these four films range from supernatural mysteries and outrageous creature features to parallel universes and analog horror. For fans of Japanese pop culture, they’re a perfect combination of Halloween chills and otaku thrills.

DOUBLE FEATURE #1: J-HORROR HALLOWEEN NIGHT

KINKI + HIGUMA!! THE KILLER BEAR

Two distinct flavors of Japanese horror, from supernatural dread to bloody creature-feature mayhem.

KINKI, from J-horror filmmaker Koji Shiraishi (NOROI: THE CURSE, SADAKO VS. KAYAKO), adapts Sesuji’s viral web novel into a chilling mystery involving bizarre disappearances, haunted livestreams, and disturbing urban legends across Japan’s Kinki region. Blending occult folklore with found-footage terror, KINKI draws on the unsettling atmosphere that made THE RING and JU-ON international horror phenomena.

Then comes HIGUMA!! THE KILLER BEAR, director Eisuke Naito’s outrageous survival thriller about a group of criminals who encounter a massive, bloodthirsty bear in the Japanese wilderness. Part creature feature, part slasher, and infused with pitch-black humor, HIGUMA!! embraces the gleeful excess of Japanese midnight cinema.

Together, these films showcase the range of contemporary J-horror, from psychological unease to over-the-top spectacle.

Halloween Night — Saturday, October 31 (BOGO, 2 for 1 ticket)

Venue: Consolidated Theatres Kahala

DOUBLE FEATURE #2: REALITY-BENDING CINEMA

YOU ARE THE FILM + GAMALAND

Parallel universes, haunted VHS tapes, and the strange possibilities of cinema itself.

Making its U.S. Premiere, YOU ARE THE FILM marks the feature directorial debut of Makoto Ueda, screenwriter of the cult sci-fi hit BEYOND THE INFINITE TWO MINUTES. When two strangers visit separate microcinemas, they discover that the people onscreen inhabit parallel realities—and can see them right back. Combining romance, comedy, and multiverse science fiction, the film’s playful, high-concept premise recalls the inventive storytelling of anime and manga.

Paired with it is GAMALAND, a found-footage horror film from Hiroki Nishii steeped in the eerie aesthetics of 1990s Japanese television and VHS culture. When a young filmmaker investigates an abandoned amusement park, mysterious archival footage reveals something increasingly sinister. Its blend of analog nostalgia and creeping dread evokes the unsettling experience of discovering a cursed videotape.

Where YOU ARE THE FILM playfully explores cinema’s possibilities, GAMALAND turns the act of watching into a source of terror. Both offer distinctly Japanese approaches to blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality.
