A-rui has run the family hairdressers in an old-fashioned area of Taichung for more than 40 years. With her tireless attitude and her stylist skills, she is a community institution. Even her children, as flighty and dismissive as they are, follow in her hairstyling footsteps. However, at a time when A-rui should be taking it easy, she refuses to take a day off and embarks upon a long journey to take care of a client. Director Fu Tien-yu returns to her hometown of Taichung to deliver DAY OFF, a beautifully-shot Kore-eda-esque family drama that depicts the bonds between different generations of working people in Taiwan. Golden Horse award winning actress Lu Hsiao-Fen (A FLOWER IN THE RAINING NIGHT (1983)) returns to the screen for the first time in more than 20 years to play A-rui. DAY OFF premiered at the Osaka Asian Film Festival, where it took home the Yakushi Pearl Award for Best Actress and the Audience Award.
