Join the filmmakers and Hula participants for a live work-in-progress screening and Q&A followed by a special Hula performance
In the heart of Hawai’i fiery Hula coach Kumu Keano and his steady partner Kumu Lono push their young team of Native Hawaiian athletes to their limits, confronting personal and cultural challenges as they strive to triumph at Merrie Monarch—the “Olympics of Hula”.
MAKING THE LINE is a character-driven feature documentary that delves into the captivating world of competitive Hula. At its core, the film poignantly explores tradition, resilience, and identity. The story centers on Kumu (master teacher) Keano, a passionate and demanding mentor whose fiery dedication drives his students to excellence, and his husband, Kumu Lono, whose calm and steady demeanor balances their partnership. Together, they guide a diverse group of young dancers striving to master the art and discipline of competitive Hula.
Among these athletes is La‘akea, the “bad boy” of this year’s Kāne (men’s) team, whose leadership and athletic prowess are tested as he balances personal growth with the weight of his responsibilities and his future. The dancers’ journeys are united by their collective goal: to uphold their Kumu’s vision and win the Merrie Monarch Festival, the pinnacle of competitive Hula.

HIFF Selects is an exclusive benefit offered to the members of the HIFF Selects program. While we strive to accommodate as many members as possible each month, please know that access is not guaranteed. Screenings operate on a first-come, first-served basis and often reach capacity quickly.
To ensure fair access and the best experience for all of our members, please review the following guidelines:
Registration and Attendance:
- If you register for a HIFF Selects screening, we ask that you only do so if you plan on attending.
- If your plans change and youʻre no longer able to attend, please cancel your tickets by emailing [email protected]
Waitlist and Standy:
- Once a screening reaches capacity, members may join the waitlist. You will be notified via email if a ticket becomes available and must register in the allotted time to secure that ticket.
- You are welcome to join the screening in person and join the standby rush line at the theatre. Admission will be granted based on availability.
