This urgent documentary takes us into the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea and one indigenous woman’s fight against the insidious influence of sanguma – sorcery violence. Enter a cinematic journey with courageous indigenous human rights defender, Evelyn Kunda as she rescues and rehabilitates survivors of sorcery accusation related violence (SARV). Having seen big non-governmental organizations fail to tackle the problem on the ground, she leads an indefatigable resistance of indigenous compassion work (marimari) – cooking meals for kids living rough, opening her home to those in need, and establishing safehouses for families. The observational lens of this verité-style film by documentarian Paul Wolffram takes the audience deep into lushly forested landscapes that provides access to a world in which this new practice of sorcery violence wreaks havoc on the lives of many innocent people in the Pacific. It’s a powerful call to action, driven by a woman with an indigenous solution to violence in her own community.
