HIFF Legacy: Donald Richie Centennial Tribute

This year marks the 100th year of the birth of Donald Richie, the world-renowned American scholar and critic who was instrumental in introducing Japanese cinema to the west.

He would be based in post-war Japan until his death in 2013. He was also a friend of HIFF, serving as a consultant in the Festival’s early days, working alongside HIFF founding director Jeannette Paulson Hereniko. There is no doubt that Richie’s imprimatur established HIFF as the festival of record of Asia-Pacific Rim cinema, now entering its fourth decade. In this special tribute-as part of the HIFF LEGACY PROJECT-this “talk story” salutes Richie’s unique perspective on Japan, as both insider and outsider, throughout all his creative endeavors.

Friends of Richie – the aforementioned Hereniko, Christopher Blasdel (music professor, shakuhachi musician); film critic Mark Schilling-will reminisce, celebrate and delve into Richie’s legacy as a scholar and as a dear friend. This presentation will also offer glimpses into the many creative worlds Donald inhabited, including photos of his artworks, a performance of live shakuhachi music he composed, and the short films DEAD YOUTH and the fifth and last segment of FIVE FILOSOPHICAL FABLES will also be screened.

This event will take place at the HIFF Headquarters, 3512 Waialae Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816
