The 2025 HIFILM StorytellersLab (HSL), sponsored by The Asian American Foundation (TAAF), brought together a dynamic group of filmmakers and writers for a transformative retreat at the historic Nutridge Estate. Designed to support the development of short screenplays adapted from original Hawai‘i literary works—including books, plays, poems, short stories, and moʻolelo—HSL was a rare opportunity to bridge written and cinematic storytelling in a uniquely local context.
Over three days, participants honed their scripts through solo writing time, workshops, one-on-one mentorship, and peer feedback. The Lab culminated in a powerful table read with professional SAG-AFTRA actors, offering each writer a chance to hear their words brought to life in front of a live audience of esteemed industry professionals.
