Joan Huang, a Chinese American high school student of immigrant parents, is determined to achieve what she sees as the ultimate symbol of acceptance: being crowned Prom Queen, at any cost. As she navigates the pressures of race, cultural erasure, and internalized bias, Joan must confront what she’s willing to sacrifice to fit in—and what it takes to truly belong, even if it means undergoing a race-changing procedure that allows her to experience life as what she’s always wanted to be…a white girl. Winner - Grand Jury Award, Narrative Feature, SXSW.
