ALAN @ WORK + EVERY DAY AFTER
Alan Chong Lau is the epitome of the blue collar artist. Aside from working in produce at Seattle's iconic Asian supermarket Uwajimaya for three decades, Alan has been hard at work creating fine art and writing poetry, as an active member of Seattle's Asian American arts community.
Filmmaker Lowell Douglas Ing weaves moving snippets of the artist's small, cartoonish paintings into his recitation of poems about produce. Some produce is rotting, some visitors to the market are cranky. This film portrait covers ten years of his life from 1998 to 2008. The result is a prolific and beloved artist, a community arts advocate, and an eclectic and quintessential cultural worker.
