A PRIVATE LIFE

In her first French-language performance, Jodie Foster dazzles as Dr. Lilian Steiner, an American psychoanalyst in Paris whose orderly life unravels after the sudden death of a patient. Reeling from both personal and professional crises, Lilian becomes consumed with doubts about the supposed suicide and launches her own investigation—suspecting murder.

Rebecca Zlotowski (OTHER PEOPLE’S CHILDREN) directs with a deft blend of menace and wit, surrounding Foster with a stellar French cast: Daniel Auteuil as her charming ex-husband reluctantly drawn into her inquiries; Vincent Lacoste as her distant adult son; Virginie Efira as the enigmatic patient Paula, glimpsed in flashback; and Mathieu Amalric as Paula’s volatile widower.

Playful, unpredictable, and edged with danger, A PRIVATE LIFE is both a gripping psychological mystery and a showcase for Foster’s most mercurial performance in years.
