QUIZ LADY

Anne (Awkwafina) is a brilliant but tightly wound, game show-obsessed young woman, who is estranged from her train-wreck of a sister Jenny (Sandra Oh). But now they must work together to help cover their mother''s gambling debts. When Anne''s beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bona-fide game show champ. Veteran actress Sandra Oh launches from her dramatic work on GREY’S ANATOMY and KILLING EVE to a comedic turn in QUIZ LADY as the chaotic Jenny, a wayward soul with big dreams who’s stuck in a messy reality, and its truly a sight to behold. Contrasting HIFF 2018 Maverick honoree Awkwafina’s reserved, cardigan-clad Anne as a quiz show savant, the film hones in on a potent sister relationship at odds and then reluctantly in concert. Director Jessica Yu (PING PONG PLAYA, HIFF 2007) makes the most of two very talented actors playing against type, with all the exuberant energy that brings to the screen. The stellar cast is rounded out by Will Ferrell as a modest television host and Jason Schwartzman as an egotistical trivia champion.
