Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? (WHAT’S WITH LOVE?) is a landmark Indonesian teen romance, first released in 2002 and rebooted as a musical in 2025 (HIFF presented the film in 2003). The story follows Cinta, a popular and high-achieving high school student with a tight-knit group of friends—Alya, Karmen, Maura, and Milly—and a gift for poetry. Her world shifts when Rangga, a quiet and reclusive student, unexpectedly wins the school’s poetry contest. Curious and slightly threatened, Cinta seeks him out for an interview, sparking a tense yet magnetic connection fueled by a shared love of literature. As their secret relationship deepens, Cinta is torn between Rangga and her loyal friends, leading to conflict, jealousy, and heartbreak. When Rangga reveals painful truths about his family and opens up to Cinta, their bond grows stronger—only to be tested once more when he must leave for New York. His final gift: a poem promising love, memory, and a hopeful return.

Indonesian filmmaking powerhouse Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana of Miles Films (KULDESAK, THE RAINBOW TROOPS) have reimagined this iconic film by making the romantic leads younger, set in high school. It’s a fresh take of the highs and lows of young love in all its foibles and tribulations. It’s as good natured and sweet as HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, where teen love carries all the weight of the world, but with a compelling ensemble led by Indonesia’s next-in-line superstars.
