Then, bit by bit, she uncovers Joe’s growing obsession with mass shootings. Even as Joe’s psychotic episodes increase in alarming frequency, she continues to hide the truth about his condition from her closest friends. Joe’s mental state deteriorates further and Irene must race against her own failing health to ensure that he can have a future where he is not at risk of hurting himself, or worse, others.

ROSEMEAD, set in the San Gabriel Valley and inspired by a harrowing true story, is a searing and intimate portrait of a mother caught in an unimaginable crisis. Lucy Liu delivers a revelatory performance as Irene, a terminally ill Chinese immigrant who discovers her teenage son’s growing obsession with mass shootings. As her health declines, Irene is faced with an impossible choice: how far will she go to protect her son from himself—and the world from him? With mounting urgency, she takes increasingly desperate and morally complex actions in a bid to hold her family together.

Directed by Eric Lin and produced by Hawai‘i’s own Mynette Louie, ROSEMEAD confronts the intersections of mental health, cultural silence, and the burdens of immigrant motherhood in America. Unflinching and deeply compassionate, the film explores the quiet tragedies hidden in plain sight, offering a powerful meditation on love, fear, and the cost of survival in a fractured world.
