ROSEMEAD

Sponsored by:

ROSEMEAD, set in the San Gabriel Valley (a Los Angeles enclave that has a primary Chinese American population) and inspired by a harrowing true story, is a searing and intimate portrait of a mother caught in an unimaginable crisis. Lucy Liu delivers a revelatory performance as Irene, a terminally ill Chinese immigrant who discovers her teenage son’s growing obsession with mass shootings. As her health declines, Irene is faced with an impossible choice: how far will she go to protect her son from himself—and the world from him? With mounting urgency, she takes increasingly desperate and morally complex actions in a bid to hold her family together.Directed by Eric Lin and produced by Hawai‘i’s own Mynette Louie, ROSEMEAD confronts the intersections of mental health, cultural silence, and the burdens of immigrant motherhood in America. Unflinching and deeply compassionate, the film explores the quiet tragedies hidden in plain sight, offering a powerful meditation on love, fear, and the cost of survival in a fractured world.

Filmmaker will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A (first screening only)
