THE SHAPE OF THINGS: THE DICK BREWER STORY

A portrait of the influential surfboard builder whose highly crafted boards made for big wave riding were coveted by professional surfers for decades. The film follows Brewer’s career, incorporating in-depth interviews and testimonials of his contemporaries, spanning many years of surfing history, all paying allegiance to the master. After personal tragedy, Brewer resurrected himself in the early 1990s with the invention of the tow board, a design innovation made in collaboration with early test pilots Laird Hamilton, Buzzy Kerbox and Darrick Doemer. The design raised the bar of big wave surfing beyond the scope of what was envisioned possible. ''Apart from his boards being the gold-standard, and apart from being our first and last of the greatest of shaping gurus, Brewer’s contribution was to look outside of surfing,” says surf historian and cast member Matt Warshaw.
