The HIFILM Producers Lab is a new initiative supporting producers based in Hawai‘i who are creating short films. Building on the success of the 2025 Storytellers Lab, this next iteration shifts the focus to producing, helping participants strengthen the creative, logistical, and strategic skills needed to shepherd projects from concept through production. Both programs are made possible through the generous support of the The Asian American Foundation (TAAF).

Held at the beautiful Nutridge Estate in Puʻu ʻUalakaʻa State Park, the lab brings participants together for workshops, mentorship, and collaborative discussion. Selected producers will receive guidance from mentors Megan Leonard, Angela Lee, Lia Alicia Mitchel, and Arom Starr-Paul while connecting with experienced industry professionals and a growing community of local filmmakers.

The program culminates in a featured keynote event open to all HIFILM members.

Eligibility: The lab is open to producers based in Hawai‘i working on short films with a committed director attached.

• Projects may be in development, pre-production, production, or post-production.
• Producers may not also serve as the director of the project.
• The attached director is warmly invited to attend the lab but is not required.
• Producers may be the writer of the script; if they are not the writer, they must demonstrate that they have secured the rights or permission to produce the script.
• Selected producers must be available to attend and fully participate in all three days of the lab.
• Priority will be given to projects with a clear production plan and a strong path toward completion, with particular interest in films rooted in Hawai‘i and the communities that call it home.
