HIFF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Core Responsibilities
Fundraising & Revenue Development
HIFF’s financial sustainability depends on the Executive Director’s ability to cultivate and close major gifts, secure corporate sponsorships, pursue grant funding, and build a diversified revenue base. The ED is the organization’s chief fundraiser.
- Lead strategy & execution for major gifts, funding partnerships, and institutional grants.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with existing and prospective donors, sponsors, collaborators and funders.
- Partner with board members to leverage their networks for introductions, cultivation events, and closing gifts.
- Explore and develop new revenue streams—including naming rights, endowment opportunities, and strategic brand partnerships.
- Collaborate with staff on grant submissions, ensuring proposals align with HIFF’s mission and reporting requirements.
Community Engagement & Cultural Leadership
As the leader of one of Hawai‘i’s leading arts organizations, the Executive Director must be a visible, trusted presence in the community—someone who leads with respect, listens before acting, and understands that relationships in the Islands are built on authenticity and sustained commitment.
- Serve as HIFF’s primary public representative and ambassador across Hawaiʻi ’s diverse communities and throughout the international film community.
- Build and strengthen partnerships with cultural organizations, educational institutions, and community groups statewide.
- Deepen HIFF’s commitment to uplift Hawaiʻi’s diverse storytellers including Native Hawaiʻi an, Pacific Islander, and Asian voices in film and media.
- Represent HIFF at local events, industry conferences, and public forums with warmth and credibility.
Strategic & Organizational Leadership
The ED partners with the Board of Directors to set organizational direction and ensures HIFF’s activities, staffing, and resources are aligned with its mission and strategic plan.
- Work with the Board to refine and implement HIFF’s strategic plan, ensuring clarity of focus and accountability.
- Lead honest assessment of all programs and initiatives—recommending what to invest in, restructure, or phase out.
- Develop and manage the annual operating budget in coordination with finance staff, board treasurer and finance subcommittee, and/or contracted bookkeeper.
- Provide the Board with timely, transparent reporting on organizational health, finances, programming, messaging, staff updates, issues and support needs, and all key decisions.
- Identify strategic growth opportunities that align with HIFF’s mission—while being disciplined about scope.
Team Leadership & Culture
The ED sets the tone for HIFF’s internal culture—fostering collaboration, clear communication, and professional development while ensuring staff have the support and resources they need.
- Responsible for budgetary accountability and balanced financial systems for each organizational category.
- Oversight on operational budget including all financial systems as managed by program directors, including associated payroll, taxes, legal documents, insurance, etc.
- Oversee hiring, onboarding, and professional development for full-time staff and seasonal contractors.
- Lead and support a dedicated team with clear roles, expectations, regular check-ins and performance reviews.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive workplace culture rooted in clear communication, transparency and mutual respect.
- Ensure core team have authority and accountability within their functional areas—avoiding bottlenecks in leadership.
Festival Planning & Programming Partnership
This role partners closely with the Artistic Director and core team to ensure HIFF’s curatorial vision, event execution, and audience experience reflect the festival’s mission and brand.
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director and programming staff on festival strategy, guest curation, Jury recruitment, marquee awards and VIP invitations.
- Ensure programming decisions align with HIFF’s mission, messaging and brand identity.
- Support the planning and execution of major events—including the Fall Festival, ʻŌpio Fest, HIFILM Industry Conference, and year-round screenings and events.
- Ensure successful event planning and logistics in partnership with Director of Operations, core team, sponsors, and venue partners.
- Oversee Festival fundraising events including Awards Gala, Opening/Closing special events and receptions
Board Relations & Governance
The ED serves as the primary liaison between staff and the Board of Directors, fostering a productive, transparent partnership grounded in mutual accountability.
- Provide clear, consistent updates to the Board—including financials, program outcomes, risks, and strategic recommendations.
- Support Board recruitment, onboarding, and engagement in alignment with governance best practices.
- Facilitate productive board meetings with well-prepared agendas, materials, and follow-through on action items.
- Engage the Executive Committee as a strategic sounding board on sensitive organizational matters.
- Meet standards and expectations as assessed by performance reviews, to be conducted on an annual basis or as requested by the board.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Senior leadership experience in a nonprofit, arts, cultural, or media organization.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, donor cultivation, and corporate sponsorship at a significant scale.
- Strong financial acumen—experience developing and managing operating budgets of $1M+.
- Proven ability to lead diverse teams with transparency, empathy, and accountability.
- Exceptional communication skills—written, verbal, and interpersonal—with comfort in public-facing roles.
- Deep understanding of and respect for Hawai‘i’s communities, cultural protocols, and the values of aloha, humility, and collective stewardship.
Strongly Preferred
- Established roots in, or a meaningful connection to Hawai‘i—with existing relationships across the nonprofit, cultural, business, or film sectors.
- Experience in film, entertainment, media, or the creative industries.
- Track record of organizational turnaround, rebuilding, or significant change management.
- Commitment to championing Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Asian, and underrepresented voices.
- Familiarity with Hawaii’s funding landscape—including state and federal grant programs, local foundations, and corporate giving culture
- Experience and/or connections to national or international sponsors who support the arts and film from Asia and the Pacific.
- Marketing, branding, or public relations experience that can elevate HIFF’s profile locally, nationally, and internationally.

PARTNERSHIPS MANAGER
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Year-Round; Full-Time
TIME COMMITMENT: 40 Hours per week. Evenings & Weekends required during Festival events

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Partnerships Manager is an essential member of the HIFF core team, as this position is the point of contact for HIFF sponsors. The position works closely with the team to identify, cultivate, and deepen relationships with various partners and sponsors for HIFF year-round and Festival efforts, manages contract and deliverables for sponsors, and supports marketing and PR efforts for the organization. This position reports to the Executive Director, but collaboratives significantly with all departments of the HIFF team. Evening/weekend and additional hours required during the film festival and special events.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
SPONSORSHIPS
- Prospect new/previous sponsors, partners, and donors
- Develop relationships with local, national, and international brands & organizations and understand their objectives by learning through research and networking
- Prepare sponsorship proposals to match brand’s objectives to maximize benefits
- Provide metrics and relevant content to educate potential partners about sponsorship opportunities before & during festival events
- Produce and deliver final sponsorship agreement contracts
- Manage a portfolio of various current sponsors and partners and the fulfillment of respective cash and trade agreements
- Coordinate the activation of in-theater, online, and event marketing and branding per sponsors and partners agreements
- Logo placement

MARKETING
- Collaborate with media partners to promote the festival to the community through Radio, Television and Digital formats
- Work with outside branding team to create HIFF Showcase and Fall Festival branding, marketing materials and other promotional items.

EVENT SUPPORT

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
- Strong connections with Hawaii’s business communities is essential
- Knowledge and love of cinema, enthusiasm for HIFFs mission and vision.
- Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills and capabilities and ability to successfully reach and communicate with a diverse range of individuals and organizations is required.
- Detail-oriented, organized and independently motivated. Ability to multitask and prioritize when working with tight deadlines.
- Fluency in Mac-based applications including MS Office, Excel, and Powerpoint
- Experience working with computer database systems and cloud-based applications including Airtable, Google Workspace, Sheets, Dropbox, Excel, and Slack
- Knowledge of international cinema, Hawaiian, Asian Pacific American communities, issues, and organizations preferred.
- Experience with photo editing software such as Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop and Premiere Pro), Canva, etc preferred
- Ticketing Management experience preferred

Seasonal Positions
Seasonal contract positions at HIFF offer excellent opportunities to experience and participate in an exciting film and cultural event. Seasonal contractors will get hands-on experience with festival planning and implementation, as well as gain exposure to the Asian American and Pacific Islander arts community.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Scheduling and work hours will be flexible and variable, with remote and on-site work necessary, required hours increasing leading up to and during the film festival. Both remote and in office work with on site work during the festival.
COMPENSATION:
Most contract positions will receive a stipend based on experience and time commitment required. Contracts are exempt, temporary, with no benefits
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR ALL SEASONAL CONTRACT POSITIONS:
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication skills

DESCRIPTION: Hawaiʻi International Film Festival (HIFF) is seeking dedicated and skilled Volunteer Language Interpreters to join our team for the 46th Annual Fall Festival. As a Volunteer Language Interpreter, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the festival experience for our international filmmakers and guests. Your primary responsibilities will include translating filmmaker Q&As and liaising with visiting filmmakers and industry guests.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Live interpretation of filmmaker introductions and Q&As during screenings and panel discussions.
- Liaise with visiting filmmakers and industry guests, ensuring smooth communication.
- Assist with interpretation during networking events and other festival activities.
- Provide accurate and culturally sensitive translations.
- Support the festival staff in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Fluent in English and one of the following languages: Korean, Japanese, Cantonese, or Mandarin.
- Comfortable speaking in front of a crowd.
- Previous translation or interpreter experience, or equivalent language skills.
- Understanding of cinema and movie vocabulary.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Seasonal Contract: October 14 – October 26
TIME COMMITMENT: 10-20 hours per week. Some early morning and late evening runs are occasionally required. Shifts scheduled based on drivers availability
PAY: $15/hour (exempt, temporary, no benefits)
JOB DESCRIPTION: Drive and maintain festival vehicles to be used to transport festival guests to/from various venues, including Airport to Waikiki runs and shuttling guests to/from screenings at Kahala Mall, Ward Village and other venues as needed. Drivers will be asked to schedule various shifts based on availability. Punctuality is imperative as many of the rides will be picking up and dropping off guests at the Honolulu Airport.
This position is perfect as a side project. It will be a lot of fun and you will meet great and interesting people in the film industry.
The Transportation Team will be required to have a valid driver’s license, personal vehicular insurance and sign a confidentiality agreement. It is imperative that all drivers maintain a professional and respectful attitude, no matter who is in the car. Safe driving is our number one priority.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drive multiple routes per shift in a festival vehicle to and from festival venues with visiting filmmakers and guests in a punctual and safe manner
- Coordinate with Transportation Manager to pick up and return vehicle keys and park vehicle in safe location overnight
- Use Slack to communicate with manager about availability and whereabouts at all time when on shift
- Maintain respectful demeanor with guests at all time
- Be responsible for vehicle cleanliness, security and safe return, as well as all items within the vehicle while it is your possession
- Work with volunteer Airport Greeters when necessary to coordinate smooth arrivals and locating guests
- Follow all local road rules and speed limits
- Arrive early for all shifts and pickups
- The signing of Confidentiality Agreement will be required
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess a valid US driver’s license and current automobile insurance, with a clean driving record.
- Previous experience as a delivery or car share driver would be cool
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills is also pretty great
- Punctual, organized, motivated and polite customer oriented attitudes only
- Must be based/currently reside in Hawaiʻi
