HIFF continues the partnership with the Daniel K. Inouye Institute, to build a better future by working with students and young filmmakers who have a powerful voice to reimagine a new world. The DKII Filmmaker Showcase features student finalists selected to showcase at HIFF and will also have the opportunity to meet a celebrity youth ambassador in a private Q&A discussion and Awards Ceremony. Past guests include actors Phillipa Soo, Jacob Batalon, and Harry Shum, Jr. Earlier this year, actor Sung Kang hosted a workshop with the students preparing for this year’s showcase. During the festival, students are invited to celebrate their films in a private reception with DKII keynote speaker and HIFF41 Maverick Award Honoree Destin Daniel Cretton.
HIFF is thrilled to expand the Future Filmmakers beyond the islands of Hawai’i through a new partnership with the Ted Stevens Foundation and Perseverance Theater in Alaska. The HIFF41 DKII Future Filmmakers Showcase will highlight a student short film made in Alaska along with the Hawai’i submissions.
This year’s students were invited to make films with the theme of “The Greatest Generation & the COVID Generation: Hope & Resiliency in Unprecedented Times” Similar to those of the “Greatest Generation,” or those who were shaped by the Great Depression and World War II, how will youth of the “COVID Generation” now decide how history will define them? The films offer the students’ perspective on what it will take for us as a state, a nation, and a world to move forward. I also want to add that these films are free on watch.hiff.org for all audiences to view internationally.
“Like the greatest generation that grew up during the Great Depression and fought courageously in WWII, our youth today have faced the unprecedented challenge of COVID with a measure of resiliency. As we now turn the corner on this global pandemic, we have the opportunity to learn from our youth how this experience has impacted them and influenced their hopes for the future.” – Jennifer Sabas, Director of the Daniel K. Inouye Institute.
