One of the biggest Korean hits of the year, HIFF is thrilled to present HOSTAGE: MISSING CELEBRITY as a special Gala screening event at HIFF41. The debut feature of writer/director Pil Kam-sung, and produced by action veteran Ryoo Seung-wan, HOSTAGE is based on the 2015 Chinese film SAVING MR. WU. However this version has a distinctly Korean twist, and this time the lead actor plays…himself.
What happens when life imitates art? Korean superstar actor Hwang Jung-min is about to find out. Jung-min has reached the pinnacle of his career, recognized as one of Korea’s top leading men, and starring in some of the biggest action thrillers of the last decade. Resting on his laurels after the latest movie premiere, he is taken aback when he is accosted on the street by a group of boorish thugs.
However, these thugs have more in mind than just jeering at the actor, and Hwang Jung-min soon finds himself kidnapped and tied up in a dank room with another young woman looking worse for the wear. When the brutal thugs request an immediate ransom, Jung-min must muster up all of his acting skills to mastermind his way out of this real and present danger. As he soon learns, this isn’t like the movies.
