HIFF44 Must-sees at Kahala Closing Weekend

As we go into our closing weekend at the Consolidated Kahala Theaters, here are some absolute ‘MUST-SEE’ films and events with many of them attached to filmmakers in attendance. First off, tickets are going fast with our added screenings of TINĀ (Opening Night) and MOLOKA‘I BOUND (Centerpiece), as well as more tickets released for HAKKENDEN: FICTION & REALITY (Closing Night).

NOBUKO MIYAMOTO: A SONG IN MOVEMENT *Filmmakers in Attendance!
From World War II incarceration to Hollywood screens to an emerging Asian American movement and bringing the arts into community, NOBUKO MIYAMOTO: A SONG IN MOVEMENT is a story of a changing community told through the singular life of one of its most beloved storytellers. CLOUD
A man wearing a bag mask suddenly appears in front of Yoshii, who suddenly becomes a “target” when he hears a voice saying “I’ll kill this guy” while looking at an online screen where hatred towards his alter ego, named “Ratel,” is posted. Why is this young man who resells goods on the internet being targeted? CURE is a suspense thriller depicting “collective madness” born from a chain of hatred. SOMEBODY
Swimming instructor Young-eun is a single mom raising her seven-year-old daughter, So-hyun. However, a series of tragic events happens as So-hyun’s puppy falls from the apartment and dies, and So-hyun bullies other kids in school. Despite her mom’s earnest efforts to address So-hyun’s mental disorder, her peculiar behavior persists. Twenty years later, Min, who works in handling unclaimed deaths, meets a new colleague, Hae-young, and they form a close bond. KA WHAWHAI TONU: STRUGGLE WITHOUT END *Filmmakers In Attendance
The battle of Orakau in 1864 between Māori resistance fighters and British soldiers is told through the eyes of two teenagers: Haki, a captured mixed-blood soldier set to be sacrificed, and Kopu, a girl whose mother makes her a reluctant medium of her people’s war god. They befriend each other in hopes of escaping, only to lead a group of young battle survivors in a final confrontation with Haki’s violent army officer father. From Mermaids To Moana — In this panel we’ll look at how the career journeys of acclaimed MOANA directors Ron Clements and John Musker (LITTLE MERMAID, ALADDIN, HERCULES) and MOANA producer, Osnat Shurer (documentaries, interactive shows, Pixar shorts, RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON) led to the original film that became the text to one of Disney’s most prevalent and successful properties.
